Phuket News : Perfect exchange partners

The Tourism Authority of Thailand offices in Phuket and Phang Nga and low budget airline Air Asia have joined forces to launch a travel campaign in a bid to boost tourism numbers during the low season.

First on their itenary was the ‘Amazing Andaman’ roadshow held in Chiang Mai last month.

Bangornrat Chinaprayoon, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket office said, “We hope to encourage the MICE market to use Phuket as a base for their meetings. We took 25 Phuket tourism operators to meet with 120 from Chiang Mai.”

Khun Bangornrat believes that the provinces of Phuket and Chiang Mai are perfect ‘exchange partners’ as each has what the other one lacks. K Bangornrat said, “Phuket has beaches but Chiang Mai has culture and beautiful mountains and forests.”

There will be various packages available as part of the drive depending on each individual tour operator. An example would be a ‘3 days 2 nights package’ which includes two nights accommodation at a hotel, activities and transfer back and forth from the airport to the hotel.

Somboon Jirayus the president of Phuket Tourism Association (PTA) is confident that the island’s ‘international’ airport will be able to cater for potentially high-numbers of travellers and said, “Phuket has many international events and over 700 hotels with about 40,000 rooms.”
