Phuket Dining : Remembering why you are here

Eating at Mom Tri’s kitchen in Kata Noi will likely serve as a reminder as to why you ever decided to come and more importantly stay on this little patch of paradise we call Phuket.

Firstly, the sea views from the exterior dining area overlook the calm sands of Kata beach and invoke a real sense of pleasurable relaxation as soon as you take your seat.

Secondly, the sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks below make a perfectly natural accompaniment to the gentle playing of Mom Tri’s resident pianist.

Lastly and arguably most importantly for a restaurant is the food and wine…

Each aspect of the experience begs to be savoured slowly and deeply. To rush the food or gulp the wine or sit at the table and not close your eyes and be thankful that you are here is simply wasteful.

Mom Tri’s Kitchen has been the winner of the Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for the last three years in a row and has over 350 labels including an extensive organic wine list and 16 wines available by the glass.

Therefore, it seemed only right that the choice of the wine was done with much deliberation, um ahhing and bluffing. Thankfully there are many experienced and knowledgeable waiters on hand to not only provide you with top-notch service but also expert advice on an apt selection based on your choice of dish.

Mom Tri’s menu has many appetisers, soups, salads, Thai dishes and a delicious variety of European dishes containing both seafood and meat. Once my food selections had been made, it was suggested that I try an accompanying glass of 2003 South African red Cabernet; a delicious wine with a deep and fruity bouquet that immediately transported me to the vin yards of France which was strange considering it was from South Africa.

I’m glad, however, because the sounds of the vuvuzelas would be really off-putting right now.

To start with, I chose the Gazpacho soup (190 baht) which the educated gastronomists of you will know is a chilled home made tomato soup. After my Peter Kay-esque internal monologue subsided (Cold Soup? Soup, cold?) I was able to fully appreciate the freshness of the dish and how refreshing it was as a starter during a warm evening.

Following the soup was a ‘Salmon Ginger’ appetiser. Slices of Norwegian salmon were prepared in a flower shape and seemed almost a shame to eat, almost. The salmon came served at the perfect temperature (an aspect often overlooked) and the consistency was just right, it also came served with a green asparagus and bean sprout salad drizzled with ginger dressing (320 baht).

The presentation of the dishes at Mom Tri’s Kitchen is exquisite, and further reaffirms the general feeling that one should not be rushing and should be enjoying the experience.
There are also a wide selection of steaks available that will impress even the most discerning of carnivores. I chose a Pepper crusted Angus Beef striploin, with Lyonnaise potato and a serving of seared spinach with green pepper corn cream sauce (1,150 baht). The steak was succulent and tender and the pepper sauce was mild enough to complement and not overpower the delicious Angus Beef.

I decided to order a Feta cheese salad to balance the meatiness of the steak dish. The organic salad came with tomato, cucumber and of course feta cheese (290 baht) and was light and went really well with the steak.

The secluded location of Mom Tri’s Kitchen and its friendly staff and wonderful food and wine all make for an incredibly enjoyable experience that is without doubt fine-dining at its finest but in a wonderfully relaxed environment.
