Phuket News : Festival of liberation and hamburgers

More than 900 Phuketians experienced an American 4th of July picnic - Phuket Navy League Style - at the HeadStart International School in Phuket.

The international school was buzzing with activity to a background of well-known American songs and the smell of hamburgers and hot dogs barbequing on grills.

The Phuket Navy League put together this American-themed day as a way of showcasing a bit of Americana to Thais, Americans, and foreign nationals living or visiting here. A great selection of American foods were served like apple pie, hot dogs and hamburgers, roasted corn, tex-mex ribs and tacos, American sandwiches, ice cream and watermelon. Highlighting the food stalls were 4 brands of Real American Beer.

Central to this picnic was a Flag Ceremony when U.S. Embassy Consul General and Counselor for Counselor Affairs, Mr. Ronald S. Robinson read a greeting message from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Following this the Phuket Navy League was presented their Official Charter by Mr Bill Waylett, Senior Director of Regional Activities, Navy League of the United States.

A wide selection of American music was mixed with live music from the Rocking Angles band played throughout the day ending with John Phillip Susa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" accompanying a lively fireworks show.

The picnic was a great day for kids with free jumping play-castles, egg toss and tug-of-war competitions and even a 4th of July traditional watermelon seed spitting contest. The Phuket Classic Car Club had an impressive display of fully restored U.S. Army jeeps from the 1940s for children and adults to sit in.

The Phuket Navy League plans on recreating this event next year in an even bigger and better way, and if this year is any indication of what's coming, you won't want to miss it.

The Navy League is an organization supporting Sea Services, families, and community relation programs throughout the world. The Phuket Navy League was formed last September and has already hosted 22 U.S. Navy ships visiting Phuket. More visible sides of the Phuket Navy League are some of the COMREL (Community Relations) projects where sailors and marines from visiting ships volunteer their time in local schools, parks and hospitals to repair, paint and share their goodwill.
