Marine Scene : The Merry Fisher -> Therein Lies a Tale.

Lee Marine, Phuket’s leading yacht brokerage, will again have its familiar race boat, the Merry Fisher 655, on duty at the Phuket Six Senses Phuket Boat Race Week 21-25 July.

The Merry Fisher carries race personnel around the course to change and move the marks around.

Lee Marine has been providing this service to Race Week and the Phang Nga Regatta for the last six years.

The Lee Marine Merry Fisher is, by the way, for sale at 1.6 million baht.

Many people may think the Merry Fisher, is the name of this distinctive and popular boat in Phuket waters.

It is not. It is the model, and therein lies a tale.

It was a gentleman called Merry de Lapoeze, a designer with French company Jeanneau, who some years ago was asked to design a small fishing boat. It was given the working title Merry Fisher, because Merry de Lapoeze was designing a fishing boat.

Somehow the name just stuck. According to Lee Marine general manager Martin Holmes, Mr. de Lapoeze is, yes, you guessed it, a very jolly and merry person who lives up to his christian name.

There are now nine models, including the new Jeanneau Merry Fisher 10, which offers a flybridge cruising experience with a large sociable open-plan cockpit area ideal for entertaining and ample sleepping quarters below decks.
